Light is not a metaphor here. It is a measurable input, and skin responds to it in ways researchers have spent years documenting. Here is what that research actually says — and, just as importantly, what it doesn't.

Why wavelength is the whole story

All light is measured in nanometres (nm). That number tells you two things: what colour the light is, and how deeply it travels into skin. Shorter wavelengths stay near the surface. Longer ones reach further down.

This matters because your skin is layered, and different concerns live at different depths. Blemishes begin in the pores near the surface. Collagen and elastin are produced deeper, in the dermis. A device that only emits one wavelength can only reach one depth — which is why Lumina Pro carries four.

460nm · Blue — the surface

Where it reaches: the outermost layers, where oil and bacteria collect.

What it's studied for: blemish-prone skin. Research on blue light has focused on Cutibacterium acnes — the bacteria associated with breakouts — and its behaviour when exposed to light in this range.

In plain terms: this is the wavelength examined in the context of clearer, more balanced-looking skin. It is not an acne treatment, and it will not replace one.

665nm · Red — the collagen layer

Where it reaches: deeper than blue, into the layer where collagen and elastin are produced.

What it's studied for: this is the most heavily researched wavelength range in skin science. Studies have investigated its relationship with the skin's natural collagen and elastin activity, the appearance of fine lines, overall texture, and an even, luminous-looking tone.

In plain terms: if you are thinking about firmness, smoothness and radiance, this is the wavelength the research is mostly about. It is also why red light became the signature of the category.

850nm · Near-infrared — beneath the surface

Where it reaches: deeper again. Near-infrared is invisible to the eye, so you will not see it working.

What it's studied for: its role in cellular energy and the skin's natural repair processes — the underlying mechanisms rather than the visible surface.

In plain terms: red light is studied for what you see; near-infrared is studied for what supports it. They are frequently paired for this reason.

1064nm · Infrared — the longest reach

Where it reaches: the furthest of the four wavelengths in the array.

What it's studied for: research in this range is less extensive than for red and near-infrared, and we will not overstate it. We include it because it extends the range of the array, not because we can promise you a specific result from it.

Photobiomodulation — the mechanism

The formal name for light therapy is photobiomodulation: the use of specific wavelengths of light to influence cellular activity. It is non-thermal and contains no ultraviolet light. It does not burn, ablate or injure tissue — which is precisely what separates it from the lasers used in resurfacing procedures.

Inside nearly every cell in your body sit mitochondria — small structures that generate the energy a cell needs to function. Research indicates that red and near-infrared light are absorbed there, principally by an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase.

Studies suggest this absorption is associated with increased production of ATP, the molecule cells use as energy currency, alongside modulation of reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide. In plain terms: the research explores whether light gives skin cells more energy to carry out the work they already do.

Collagen and elastin

Collagen gives skin its structure. Elastin gives it spring. The natural activity of both declines with age, and that decline is what becomes visible as fine lines and a loss of firmness.

Research has investigated whether light therapy supports the cellular processes involved in maintaining these proteins. This is an area of genuine, ongoing study — not settled fact — and we describe it that way deliberately.

What this does not mean

Photobiomodulation is not a heat treatment, not ultraviolet, and not a substitute for medical care. The research described on this page examines LED light therapy as a category. It is not evidence about any individual product, and it does not describe guaranteed outcomes for any individual person.

Safety

LED light therapy is generally well tolerated. A session should feel like nothing more than gentle warmth and bright light. Consult a qualified healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take photosensitising medication, have a history of light-triggered seizures, have a diagnosed skin condition or recent facial procedure, or have any eye condition.
